The search for better materials has been part of t•Ana Couture since the beginning.
When the Maison began taking shape in 2018, one question sat quietly behind it: why should a love of refined fashion require a compromise in compassion for animals?
Material innovation has moved considerably since then. One alternative we continue to explore is Desserto®, a cactus-based material developed in Mexico for fashion and interior applications.
What Desserto® Is
Desserto® develops technically advanced materials using cactus-derived inputs and proprietary bio-based technology. The manufacturer states that its most advanced materials can reach up to 90% bio-based content. Composition varies by specification, which is why we prefer to identify the material used for a particular t•Ana Couture piece rather than treating all “vegan leather” as one category.
The material is designed for applications requiring softness, structure and durability, including fashion accessories and interiors.
Why Material Documentation Matters
Animal-free does not automatically mean impact-free, and “plant-based” can describe materials with very different compositions. For the Maison, progress means asking more precise questions: what is the material made from, where does it come from, how does it perform and what documentation accompanies it?
When a t•Ana Couture piece uses a named plant-based material such as Desserto®, we aim to state that specifically and retain relevant supplier documentation where available.
A Continuing Practice
Desserto® is one part of a wider material journey that includes durable animal-free alternatives, upcycling, archive textiles and the thoughtful reuse of existing pieces and materials. The goal is not to present one material as a perfect answer, but to keep improving the relationship between design, performance and compassion.
Selected designs may be interpreted in documented plant-based materials subject to availability and suitability for the construction of the piece.
